CCHS Basebal: Our First Week

17 April 2010 No Comment

Well, last week, the Cheektowaga Varsity baseball team opened their season at home against Springville. And they opened it in grand fashion. Senior Jon Klein led the team to a 3-0 win, pitching a complete game, striking out thirteen and only allowing two hits. Capping off the night were some big hits from both Klein and senior Frank Mancuso, both leading to the winning runs.

Next, Cheektowaga set their eyes on Amherst, looking for their second win of the season. This game however, did not go as planned. With senior Corey Agustin on the mound, the Warriors were dealt a heartbreaking 15-10 loss. Corey couldn’t seem to find the strike zone from the start and that would plague the team for the rest of the game. Despite being down in the game, the Warriors didn’t give up, with big hits coming all though the lineup. The one bright spot coming when, you guessed it, senior John Roman came in for three relief innings striking out three and walking none.
Despite this tough loss, the Warriors had high hopes for turning it around against Depew. With Agustin starting after only pitching two innings the game before, Cheektowaga was clearly more solid both pitching and in the field. Corey went six strong, but the bats couldn’t wake up, leaving the Warriors to an ohh so close 3-2 loss, dropping the team to 1-2.
Capping off the four game week was supposed to be a game at home against Pioneer. However, the clouds opened up, handing Cheektowaga their third rain-out of this short season. But in reality it couldn’t have come at a better time, not only giving them a day to recoup but also to reflect. So, on Friday the coaches held a team meeting, closed to the press (haha, just kidding) in which they, and the players, looked back on the week. They were able to reassess their goals looking back and forward.
With clear heads, the Warriors will go into Niagara Fall and Lancaster for two none league games looking to achieve their goals. But in this reporters mind, in order to win, they need to play hard, play smart, but also play the game, because, after all, that is what it is. They all have this great opportunity to hit the field and play the game they love, so why shouldn’t they have fun doing it.
